Get yourself in the right mindset to crush with these non-poker-strategy MicroMillions tips

MicroMillions 2025 is right around the corner, and for recreational poker players, it’s one of the most exciting times of the year.

Throughout the series, which runs from August 17 – 31, 2025, you’ll find dozens of events with buy-ins as low as $1.10. There’s nothing micro about the prize pools, though; each event gives you the chance to turn a small entry fee into a fantastic payday.

You don’t need to have years of experience or be studying eight hours a day to enjoy success in tournament poker. With a little preparation, some smart decision-making, and a good mindset, you could find yourself enjoying deep runs, great cashes, and maybe even picking up a MicroMillions title.

Here are 5 tips for low-stakes success this series.

1. PICK YOUR SPOTS

Or DON’T TRY TO PLAY EVERYTHING

We’re like kids in candy shops when the MicroMillions schedule drops.

So many tournaments! All with buy-ins within reach! It’s easy to get swept up in the excitement.

But before you start registering, take a minute to pick out the events you really want to play. Because if you play too many (especially at once!), it could hurt your results.

Here’s what we suggest:

Pick the best events that fit your schedule

If you’re up super early for work the next morning, don’t play tournaments that run deep into the early hours. Turbos might suit you better. Alternatively, if you’re a night owl, pick some events you can play in peace when everyone else in the house has gone to bed.

When multitabling, stick to games and formats you enjoy

You’ll play better when you’re comfortable. Just because there’s an 8-game tourney running, doesn’t mean you should jeopardise the four no limit hold’em tournaments you’re already playing to register.

Speaking of multitabling—if you’re new to it, start small.

One or two tournaments at a time will keep you focused and give you the time to think through decisions.

2. KNOW YOUR GAMES AND FORMATS

Having just suggested you stick to formats you know well, we’re now going to totally contradict ourselves.

That’s because while MicroMillions provides an awesome tournament series for low-stakes grinders, it also offers the perfect opportunity to dabble in games and formats you’ve never played before, without risking much.

Take a look through the schedule. Are there games and formats you’ve always wanted to try but didn’t want to risk a big buy-in? Here’s your chance. All we’d say is, if you are going to experiment, do it during some series downtime—like when you’re only playing one or two tournaments in the session.

Even in no limit hold’em, the MicroMillions 2025 schedule has way more on offer than just “standard tournaments.” Each hold’em format has its own rhythm and strategy. Here’s a quick guide:

PKOs (Progressive Knockouts)

Every time you bust a player, you earn a bounty (half in cash now, half added to your own bounty). In these events, early aggression can be extra rewarding, as busting opponents has immediate cash value. Learn more about PKOs here.

Turbos

Blinds rise quickly, which forces quicker decisions. If you like action and only have a couple of hours, turbos are for you.

Deep Stacks

You start with a lot more chips, so expect to play big pots. Patience and post-flop skills matter more here.

Mystery Bounties

These play just like regular tournament for the first stage. But at some point–usually when the bubble bursts–mystery bounties will come into play. Players will now win a Mystery Bounty for every player they knock out during this stage. Learn more about Mystery Bounty tourneys here.

3. STICK TO YOUR BANKROLL MANAGEMENT

Even though the stakes are low, a big series (even a micro-big one) can quickly drain your funds if you’re not careful. A $1.10 event here, a $5.50 there—over dozens of tournaments, it adds up.

Here’s how to keep things under control:

  • Set a budget for the series before it begins, and stick to it.
  • Take advantage of satellites – Small buy-in events awarding seats to bigger tournaments.
  • Try Spin & Go qualifiers for a quick, low-cost shot at tickets.

4. ONLY PLAY WHEN YOU’RE FEELING SHARP

It’s always tempting to jump into tourneys when you have free time, but make sure you really want to play before hitting the register button. Tournaments can take a while to complete, and if you’re not in the mood, you could find yourself punting away stacks.

Here’s what to do if you want a deep run:

  • Play when you’re alert and free from distractions
  • Avoid ragging tournaments you can’t finish
  • Remember that late-game play matters most. If you’re running on fumes when the big money decisions come, you’ll be at a big disadvantage.

5. DON’T CHASE LOSSES

JUST ENJOY THE RIDE

There is a TON of variance in tournament poker, especially in low-buy-in events with huge player pools.

If things don’t go well for you this series and it feels like you’re losing every flip, or the bad player who plays every hand keeps getting lucky against you, just remember: this is normal. Even pro players get knocked out far more than they win.

The key is not to let it ruin your enjoyment of the game (or wipe out your bankroll). If you’re having fun and playing your best, that’s all you can control.

Chasing your losses by risking more in buy-ins you can’t afford is never going to work. If the buy-in is too big for your bankroll, you simply won’t be able to play your best through a fear of getting knocked out and losing even more.

Instead, just celebrate the small wins (like a successful bluff). Post some hands you’re not sure about in the PokerStars Discord. Relish in the competition.

This is one of the most fun times of the online poker year.
